What useful skills do I have?

Teachers have many skills.

To have succeeded in teaching you must be a skilled communicator. You can read your audience and have an impressive knowledge of  both using
and reading body language. You can manipulate large groups into following your directions.

Many jobs require skilled communicators, including sales, social work and management.

These are massive fields and many teachers could handle any job in these areas with great success. Sales is an area where training might be necessary, but you already have the basics.

How do I find a job?

Many posts are never advertised, instead they are filled by people who hear about the job through their network of contacts. You must build a wide network within your preferred company or field.

Get Qualified

You know that you can handle most jobs successfully, but you have to be able to prove it. You need paper qualifications.

Take OU or local college courses in management and make sure you pass with distinction.

Gain experience in your preferred field, maybe by working in the summer holidays, explaining to the company that you are looking for another permanent job, outside teaching in the next two years.

Interview Skills

As a teacher you have been on the other side of the interview many times. You may need to brush up on your skills as an interviewee.

There are many courses, websites and books on improving interview skills, so this site will concentrate on those pertinent to you, as a teacher looking for employment outside teaching.

Reassure the Interviewer

You need to convince the interviewer that you are genuine in looking for a job outside teaching. You need to have positive reasons for a such a major change in your career direction.

You may be older than most interviewees and the interviewer may have concerns about how well you will fit into the company. These will include how you will react to having a line manager who may be much younger, with a totally different background.

Make it clear that you recognise that there will be aspects of the job that you will need to learn, but that you anticipate picking theses up quickly and fitting into the current set-up.

Be Positive

As an older candidate for the job you bring many skills to the work place that younger candidates have not had the chance to learn.

Emphasise these skills, particularly in communication. Emphasise, too, your proven positive attitude to working hard and assuming individual responsibility within a team environment.
