Advantages of Early Retirement

Live Longer

Teachers who work til 65 are usually dead by the time they are 68. So if you want to live longer, get out of teaching as soon as you can.

Feel Better

Stress affects your body in all sorts of ways. Stress makes you feel physically ill, causes high blood pressure, strokes, heart disease, back ache, headaches and many other pains. The obvious psychological benefits of reducing your stress levels are numerous.

More Social Life

Your evenings and weekends are your own. You can spend more time pursuing your own interests and developing new skills.

Increased Fitness Levels

You will have the time and energy to pursue new sports and leisure activities, from Tai Chi to Golf, from Dragon Boating to Hill Walki

Disadvantages of Early Retirement

Less Money

Your teaching pension will be less than the salary you are used to. The difference is less than you think though because you will pay no Superannuation, no National Insurance and  much less tax.

No Enjoyable Staff Meetings

You will miss the useful academic feedback that most meetings give you.

No Parents' Evenings

You will miss the social contact and pleasant chats with parents.

No Marking

No more chuckling over silly things your students have written.

You Will Need to Buy Red Pens

There is a work around for this - stock up in your last year.
