Most
teachers who successfully escape from teaching have two or more ways to
replace their teaching income.
Plan Early
Exam marking
In the two or three years before your projected
escape date it is a good idea to apply for exam marking and moderating
positions.
This work is not well paid but involves little stress. It can be done
in addition to any other income source you have.
The idea may not appeal to you, but in the short term a few thousand
pounds a year extra may be useful.

Private Tuition
Working on a one-to-one basis with a willing
student is totally different from teaching in the classroom.
You will need to advertise for a few years and parents prefer someone
who is still teaching. Once you have established a reputation as a good
tutor and parents are contacting you as a result of recommendations
this becomes less important.

Writing Resources
Many of the resources that you use in your classroom
can earn you money outside it. Your worksheets will have been through a
process of gradual improvement and they will be unique.
You may have ideas on how teacher training could be improved and be
able to produce a staff training manual that you can sell for
£100 or more. (I have done this)
Whatever your ideas there are two simple ways to make money by
publishing them:
- Go to an publisher who specialises in the field
- Buy the equipment and print, bind and market
your resources yourself.

Resources pages for more information. |
Use Your Strengths
You can make money from the things you enjoy doing.
Hobbies
Any hobby can be turned into a source of income. If
you ar an amateur artist you can make money from your paintings by
looking at what people want and producing that kind of work. If you
find that paintings with people in sell well then learn to paint people.
- A photographer could sell photographs to the
media or to online agencies. You may have to invest in a better camera,
but the outlay could soon be recouped.
- A sportsman could set up a company to organise
sporting events.
- If you are an avid reader you could be earning
money while you read by proof reading.
- If you enjoy writing there are many
opportunities for writers to earn money, including writing articles for
magazines or for websites.
- If you love dogs/roses/DiY, you could set up a
website about dogs/roses/DiY, and make
money from the advertising on your site(s). Check the Escape
Resources Page
Knowledge
You have years of accumulated knowledge in your
specialist field. Think of "out of the box" ways you could use that.
- A science or technology specialist may be able
to train in Risk Assessment and become a highly paid Risk Consultant.
- A language teacher could offer translation
services to local businesses or via the Internet.
- An English teacher could train to become an
editor for a publishing company.
By planning ahead you can ensure that you have the
necessary paper qualifications ready for your Teaching Escape Day.
Skills
You have many high level management skills, but no
paper evidence of them. Look for management training courses that
you can fit in with your teaching commitments in the last few years of
teaching. You must
have paper qualifications.
